The best kebab around hits town

Must read

HARTFORD — A new tasty treat has made its appearance in Hartford.

Ray and Elma Ramic opened their restaurant, Doner Kebab, in February, after spending more than a year retrofitting the space from a dry cleaners to the bright, comfortable eat-in/drive-thru facility it is now.

In addition to plumbing, carpentry and other remodeling projects, Ray Ramic counts the time the couple dreamed of opening the restaurant in the process. While working on the space, he also spent 15 hours a day driving a tanker truck, then came home to work on the restaurant.

Ramic immigrated to the United States from Germany, where he attended culinary school. He and Elma were married in 2008 and have two children, ages 9 and 10.

Donor kebabs are made from slices of marinated meat that is stacked on large skewers and roasted in front of a vertical rotisserie.

“Our kebabs are made of 100 percent Angus beef,” Ramic said, explaining that gyros can be made of pork, chicken, lamb or beef.

Classic Doners are served on flatbread, filled with steak strips, shredded lettuce, chopped red cabbage, sliced onions and tomatoes. Doner Wraps are filled with the same ingredients, but served with cheese and rolled in a flour tortilla.

Both options are topped with any of the Signature Trio sauces, Sharf (spicy), Krauter (herbs) and Knoblaluch (garlic). The breads are made in-house and all vegetables are prepared daily.

According to the website, “We started this restaurant because we wanted to bring our culture and amazing food to the neighborhood. We strive to make people happy and give them a little taste of home.” Mission accomplished.

Doner Kebab is located at 31 Lone Oak Lane. The restaurant is open Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., closed Sunday and Monday. Order online for pickup at donerkebabhartford.com or stop in during business hours.
