With few Kentucky Derby odds markets available, there really isn’t much of an opportunity to compare numbers. Bet365 is one of the only names on the list of best sportsbooks in North America to have Kentucky Derby odds available this early.

Kentucky Derby odds movement

We haven’t seen much notable movement over the past few days, with the top five horses carrying identical odds from the previous update.

One notable change: Extra Anejo has gone from a +2000 contender to off the board as the Steve Asmussen-trained 3-year-old works his way back into prime race form. Winchell Thoroughbreds racing manager David Fiske says it’s more likely that Extra Anejo will return for the Preakness rather than push to be ready for the Kentucky Derby.

“He was only away from the track for 30 days and he didn’t gain as much weight as he could have,” Fiske told Bloodhorse. “He’s a big eater.”

Same, Extra Anejo. Same.

Kentucky Derby odds 2023: Favorites

It’s good to be Todd Pletcher these days. It’s probably good to be Todd Pletcher most days, actually, but it’s especially good as of now.

The legendary trainer has three of the top four current Kentucky Derby odds contenders in his stable, including massive favorite Forte. A strong result at Churchill Downs would be a welcome development for Pletcher, who has claimed just two Kentucky Derby championships despite having 62 career starters in the marquee event.

Forte might have the best shot at winning, but he’s a tough sell at +300 this far out from the actual race. Bettors might actually be better off hoping for a slight stumble from Forte in the events leading up to the Derby with the chance at getting a better price.

Kentucky Derby odds 2023: Contenders

Between the grammatically irresponsible Two Phil’s, a pair of horses that sound like Axe body sprays in Rocket Can and Hit Show, and an entry that sounds like it was born to be atop the podium in Victory Formation, we have no shortage of intriguing early contenders.

One way to identify a viable contender this far out is to look for horses with strong showings in Grade 1 stakes races. Many of those fields feature multiple horses expected to run for the roses, and contenders with an established track record of success here are generally great picks.

Kentucky Derby odds 2023: Long shots

Nothing invigorates the more casual horse racing crowd like a long shot making a legitimate bid for a Kentucky Derby victory. And they’ve been treated to a couple of humdingers in recent years, with Rich Strike pulling off an 80-to-1 stunner last year and the quaintly-named Country House shocking the world at 65-to-1 in 2019.

You can always wait until post-post-position (does that look right?) to get your long-shot picks in, but you actually have a window of opportunity for even longer odds if you have the stomach for it. Once the final field is set, most of those +10000s disappear in a hurry.

Kentucky Derby odds 2023: Fades

At this point in the horse racing calendar, there are several compelling reasons to fade a horse, particularly one in the back half of the odds table.

Pay particular attention to horses that haven’t yet accrued enough points to make the field. While there might appear to be value in taking them at longer odds heading into the final pre-Derby stretch, there’s also the chance they won’t even qualify for the race.

Also be mindful of horses that have seen long stretches of inactivity or are battling injury. Those are easy fades at this point in the betting research process.
