It’s only a few days until the start of tournament week, and the Valero Texas Open odds are getting more competitive than ever. J.J. Spaun took the 2022 Valero Texas Open title, walking away with more than $1.5 million for his first PGA Tour victory.
The question is, can he duplicate those results this season? The field will be as competitive as ever for the 2023 Valero Texas Open with seven former Texas Open champions, such as Martin Laird, Andrew Landry, and Corey Connors.
We’ve got our eyes on a few favorites, and we can’t wait to share our predictions and some betting tips that will make this an exciting tournament for you.

Valero Texas Open Preview (2023)
So, who will take the 2023 Texas Open? The question is a mystifying one because the behemoths of the current golf world, like Jordan Spieth, Rory Mcilroy, and Chris Kirk, don’t appear to be participating in this year’s Valero Texas Open…yet. That’s fine because plenty of players have already signed up to play.
The previously mentioned Spaun and Connors are definite considerations, although the former would be winning it back-to-back, a rare feat for anyone. Hatton is a player to remember as he’s 16th in the official world golf ranking but fifth on the PGA Tour money leaders list.
There are two international players here to watch out for – Kazuki Higa, who had a hell of a run in the 2022 Japan Open, finishing as the top money-earner. The other is the Columbian Nico Ecchavarria, who will be making his Valero Texas Open debut.
Other players we like for the Valero Open are the Texans in the tournament, such as Landry, Jimmy Walker, Cole Hammer, Cameron Champ, and Kyle Westmoreland. Feeling at home can be a huge advantage, and one of these Texans could use that home cooking to propel themself to the top of the Valero Open leaderboard.
Check out a few of our favorite picks for the 2023 Valero Texas Open.
Best Valero Texas Open Value Picks
The hottest guy in the entire Valero Open field right is Hatton, who is fifth on the money list and 16th in the world. The temperamental Brit finished second behind Scheffler with 12 under in the Players Championship.
With how he’s played this golf season, Hatton is our top-value pick to win the Valero Texas Open. We think he’ll take his fantastic performance on the back nine of the Players Championship and use that momentum to grab his first Texas Open trophy.
Winning the Valero Open would move Hatton to fourth place on this year’s money list, trailing Kurt Kitayama by about a half-million dollars.
Another name to check out is Matsuyama, although several spots behind Hatton on the money list (33rd), is one spot ahead of him in the world rankings with the 23rd spot. Matsuyama is the first Japanese player in PGA history to win a major (2021 Masters).
Injuries plagued Matsuyama in 2022, but he’s finally warming up with two top-10 finishes this season, including a career-best solo fifth in the Players Championship.

Valero Texas Open Dark Horse Candidates
Who else could creep to the top of the leaderboard on the final day of the Valero Open? Another guy in the field that could make some noise is Si Woo Kim, the South Korean with four Tour wins.
While he was T27 at the Players Championship, he’s currently 12th in FedEx Cup points and has five top-25 finishes already this season. Kim may not be the hottest golfer but never count out a four-time champion.
Another one to watch for is Rickie Fowler out of Murrieta, California. He’s one of the more popular players for the PGA but hasn’t won anything since 2019. On that note, the guy has nine professional wins, including five on the PGA Tour.
Fowler has been playing well this season with six top-25 and three top-10 finishes. He’s long overdue for a win making Fowler our favorite dark horse bet.

Valero Texas Open Long Shot Candidates
There have been a ton of tournaments won by long shots, but we don’t recommend putting any money on them due to the huge risk. If you’re going to take any for fun’s sake, we think Spaun is a solid choice for a long-shot bet.
Spaun has been there, done that, and is the Valero Open’s most recent champion with his 2022 win. He’s looking to grab another, and it wouldn’t surprise us if he’s one of the last ones standing at the 101st Valero Texas Open due to his strong play over the last full calendar year.
One strike against him is that there hasn’t been a repeat Valero Open winner since Zach Johnson did it in 2008 and ‘09. Still, Spaun’s familiarity with the TPC San Antonio The Oak’s course makes him our recommendation for a long shot to win the 2023 Texas Open.
